Immersive Experience Network Summit 2025

Last week we were delighted to be in attendance at the Immersive Experience Network annual summit in London as Artists in Residence. Not only was it an inspiring and creative few days of talks and workshops, but also our first opportunity to playtest scenes from our new Immersive Arts UK funded experience, ‘Active Minutes’ with some very generous and enthusiastic groups.

“Guided by both human and wearable-tech personal trainers, Active Minutes transports players to a world of corporate away days and data surveillance… with sweat bands. This fun and active touring immersive show explores how we define our own abilities with reference to the successes and failures of the people around us, tackling the accessibility of both live immersive experiences and of group exercise itself.”

PERFORMER WANTED – Join the creative team for Active Minutes

We are on the hunt for a dynamic improviser/performer to join the creative team for Active Minutes – a brand-new immersive performance set in gyms and sports centres.

We’re looking for YOU if you:
🏋️ Can embody a playful, fictional fitness instructor.
🎭 Have experience with improvisation & interactive performance.
✨ Are curious about immersive theatre and new performance formats.
🤝 Thrive in collaborative, inclusive creative spaces.

Project Details:
📍 Coventry-based R&D & rehearsals: Oct 1–3, 15–16, 20–21, 2025
🎭 Tech/Dress: 12 Nov | Performances: 13–14 Nov
💰 £175/day (10 days) = £1,750 + travel

Immersive Arts UK Funding Success!

We’re delighted to have been selected as an EXPERIMENT awardee by Immersive Arts UK to research and develop a new piece of work using the NAIAD platform.

‘Active Minutes’ is a new touring immersive experience for real-world gyms and fitness spaces. Designed for 20 participants and guided by a performer as Fitness Instructor, the show uses wearable technologies to explore how we define our own abilities with reference to the successes and failures of the people around us.

This project tackles the accessibility of both immersive live experiences and of group exercise itself. We want to build best-practice examples of how immersive work can be developed alongside diverse audiences, in particular how inclusion can happen in-universe, using creative technical tools for high-quality onboarding and offboarding outside of the live event.

NAIAD – A new platform for accessible hybrid outdoor arts and smartphone immersive experiences

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve received support from InnovateUK as part of the New Innovators programme for Immersive and Creative Industries in Coventry and Warwickshire. This new R&D will support the development of NAIAD, an app-free, web-based solution for smartphones that powers audience interactivity, immersivity and accessibility. This tool will evolve from new approaches we developed as part of the Paddling Light programme and we’re delighted to continue working with Creative Technologist and Real World Game Designer John Sear and with Creative Producer and Access Consultant Lisa Franklin, both of whom have been members of the extended LR family for some time. NAIAD will work on any web browser, does not require you to download any app or join any dedicated Wi-Fi network. It will serve media assets, sound, light and text to smartphones with very low latency. The team will aim to use an all-abilities-first approach to develop new ways of empowering audiences to make outdoor work both more interactive and more inclusive; controlling sound, light and projection, influencing interactive narratives, revealing custom and self-directed story paths through outdoor experiences, and finding new ways of embedding captioning and audio description in ways that work for all participants.

Ivors nomination for ‘Rites for Crossing Water’

We’re absolutely over the moon that ‘Rites for Crossing Water’ is one of three nominees in the 2023 Ivors Classical Awards in the Sound Art category.

Produced as part of Random String 2021, ‘Rites for Crossing Water’ was part of our Future Folk commissioning strand that aimed to imagine future folk rites and rituals for the Coventry Canal. Crewdson & Cevanne collaborated with Coventry artist and illustrator Jessica Glover to develop the work which also involved several workshops with local residents through our roam+dwell summer programme. The commission resulted in spectacular an outdoor installation for the festival in 2021, as well as an EP of new music on Accidental Records and an AR book featuring Jess’s animations, published by LR, which were both launched at The Tin as part of the Waterways Festival in Coventry Canal Basin in 2022.

We couldn’t be happier for Cevanne, Hugh and Jess, and can’t wait to find out the results in a few week’s time.

Canal Basin Play Day – Saturday Aug 5th

Join us in Coventry Canal Basin for a day of play!

Saturday August 5th 2023. 1pm – 4pm

We’ll be transforming the canal basin for one special day of play and creativity for all ages. Everything totally free and open to all.

There’ll be canoeing taster sessions from Mercia Canoe Club, get physical with Popup Parkour workshops from Ascension Dance, live music from The Tin Music and Arts and a whole host of other playful activities to get you having fun by the water. We even have free snacks and fruit for kids. If the weather is wet, some activities will head inside the Tin.

EuroCanCan comes to Cov

On Saturday 13th May 11.00-3.00pm, we will be inviting shoppers in the Lower Precinct, to come and join in a dance for unity, Eurovision style.

EuroCan-Can is a moment of pop-up silliness, using greenscreen to bring random dancers together digitally, in a never-ending can-can line. The project is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund who provided a special fund for projects that celebrate the sometimes daft and always creative spirit of Eurovision.

Over the last week, we have been touring community venues around the city – including the Foleshill Community Centre, St Francis in Radford and Earlsdon Park Village – and this event at the Lower Precinct is the final outing of the dancing booth before the Eurovision 2023 Finals in Liverpool. Ludic Rooms has been working with Coventry’s Ukrainian Community Centre and the EuroCan-Can line includes Ukrainian dancers, wearing traditional costume.

EuroCan-Can line can be found online but will also be shown on the Big Screen in Millennium Square (10th-17th May)

Using AR to make Redditch’s Paolozzi mosaic murals POP!

For the last few weeks we’ve had the pleasure of working with students from Heart of Worcestershire College to produce a series of pixel art animations inspired by the Paolozzi mosaic murals in Kingfisher Shopping Centre in Redditch town centre. Supported by the Cultural Compact for North East Worcestershire, this project came about as part of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the iconic murals’ installation. Students were invited to create contemporary responses to the complex and colourful collages, introducing movement and revealing new layers of meaning for the artworks for audiences in 2023. There are now 4 panels that come to life when viewed through the free Artivive app which you can experience yourself over the coming months as the celebrations continue.

Free Training – An Introduction to Live Streaming

Over the years, Ludic Rooms have amassed a wide range of media and production kit and we’re opening up our resources for use by CV-based artists and creative organisations for new live projects and experiments.

In particular LR is pleased to offer a range of live streaming equipment, in kits to suit all levels of experience from single camera self-operated setups to multi camera broadcast studio in a box solutions. If you have an idea for a new streaming project, hybrid online event or performance then thanks to support from Coventry City Council we can provide the equipment and training to support you getting started.

For a limited time was can provide access to equipment for drastically reduced prices or even free depending on the nature of the project and its beneficiaries. We’re especially keen to support ideas that want to stream from unusual, unused or outdoor spaces and can provide additional specialist equipment to support these projects. We can also support live streaming in 360 video for VR audiences.
