Last week we were delighted to be in attendance at the Immersive Experience Network annual summit in London as Artists in Residence. Not only was it an inspiring and creative few days of talks and workshops, but also our first opportunity to playtest scenes from our new Immersive Arts UK funded experience, ‘Active Minutes’ with some very generous and enthusiastic groups.

“Guided by both human and wearable-tech personal trainers, Active Minutes transports players to a world of corporate away days and data surveillance… with sweat bands. This fun and active touring immersive show explores how we define our own abilities with reference to the successes and failures of the people around us, tackling the accessibility of both live immersive experiences and of group exercise itself.”

We have some more playtest opportunities coming up on Friday November 14th, this time in a real-world gym setting with thanks to our amazing project partner AT7 and CVLife. Drop bally@ludicrooms.com an email if you are interested and available during the day to come play.

On Saturday 8th October, 12.30pm-6pm we’ll be joining the fun in Lady Herbert’s Garden as part of the research and development of a new piece of work with Coventry River Cultural Consortium.

We’ll be inviting you to plunder a random selection of historic documents of yesteryear to create a cutup and collaged new narrative of Coventry as a River City. In this alternative history, the river Sherbourne flows mighty and strong and provides watery experiences of all kinds to the city folk. Workshop participants can dive into our treasure trove of miscellaneous Cov-related texts and mash together anything that strikes them as curious, funny, sad or vitally significant. Together we’ll make an alternative folk history of this city of boats, mariners, fisher boys and salmon. The results of this workshop will continue to be developed and shared by Ludic Rooms as part of the Historic England High Streets Cultural Programme which is being delivered in Coventry by Coventry University, the Historic Coventry Trust and the River Cultural Consortium.

About the Herbert Beer Garden event:

Historic Coventry Trust have created their very own beer! Be the first to try ‘Olde Tower Mild’ as they transform Lady Herbert’s into a special beer garden for the city centre in a day of drinks, food and live music. Cheers!

Brewed in collaboration with local, award winning Dhillon’s Brewery, ‘Olde Tower Mild’ was inspired by the Olde Tower Inn, a timber-framed pub dating to the 15th century once adjacent to Cook Street Gate. Before its demolition in the 1960s, the pub was built directly onto the gatehouse, providing the only access following the destruction of the city walls in 1662. A traditional midlands mild, the beer will highlight the amazing history of the site and visitors are invited to Lady Herbert’s Beer Garden to be the first to try Coventry’s newest beer, inspired by one of the city’s oldest buildings.

You can find out more about the event here

With the Open Citizens prototype exhibition now over – the team now have to face the hard task of whittling down the ideas that the people of Coventry have proposed over the last 2 months. There are so many exciting concepts that have been proposed – how can we possibly choose…

So it’s time to get our tech-hats on and work out which of your ideas will really make Coventry a more playable city!

We’ve been exploring ideas to see if they are viable, testing technology, hacking speakers, soldering electronic boards, chatting with super-smart software guys & gals – and even doing a tour of all the bins in Coventry City Centre (a very ‘interesting’ day for our hard-working intern!).

And, finally – we have it! A list of 4-5 really exciting tech-play installations that we’re going to work our little socks off, with the help of some tech-savvy friends & artists to bring to life in Coventry between the 16th-22nd of October…

But we’re not giving anything away just yet…so keep your eyes and ears peeled for more Open Citizens news coming your way soon!

We were invited by Make Space to run a creative play session at this year’s Godiva Festival, the UK’s largest free and ticketless family festival (there were nearly 150,000 visitors this year!) Over the course of the weekend we welcomed around 3000 people into the tent to build and play with a giant Rube Goldberg-esque marble run. By the end it was around 5m³ and had 300 or so golf balls running around it at a time. We asked people either to build a ‘module’ by themselves which we could add on somewhere, or to augment something that was already in place. There were self-contained spirals, jumps, cyclones and banked ramps as well as nifty details like rocking flags and noise makers. Will definitely be doing this one again!
