This project tackles the accessibility of both immersive live experiences and of group exercise itself. We want to build best-practice examples of how immersive work can be developed alongside diverse audiences, in particular how inclusion can happen in-universe, using creative technical tools for high-quality onboarding and offboarding outside of the live event.

My association with Dom Breadmore goes back a lot further than LR –  when he was just a keen whippersnapper, still at Coventry University on the same Communications course that I had studied, 15 years earlier. I was then the Video Officer at the beloved Depot Studios – a Council run media facility for the young people of Coventry. Dom drew my attention immediately with his boundless knowledge and enthusiasm for video production, his geekery, plus his larger than life presence. He quickly became a firm fixture in the Coventry arts community, collaborating with theatre companies and choreographers to make bold visual installations and films. 

It was at Ludic Rooms, the company that Dom set up with Ashley James Brown, that we converged again, in 2013 at a point where I was on the lookout for new kinds of opportunities and took up the offer for a coffee at the LR studios, at Coventry Canal Warehouse. Everything about the experience was memorable and quintessential to the way Ludic Rooms was, and is; the great coffee in neverending supply, the cosy, cluttered, interesting space and the wide ranging conversation, that ended with us devising a new arts and tech project, that would iterate four times over the next decade. 

Dom drew me into LR over time and over the next ten-ish years we’ve ended up creating a lot of wildly different projects that neither of us would have dreamt of, or made, without the other. It’s been a rich, sometimes hard, but joyous experience. 

I plan to take some of the playful, DIY spirit of Ludic Rooms with me; creating arts projects in new kinds of contexts, as well as working on my own arts practice of making and experimenting. I’ll definitely keep in touch with LR and will continue to advocate for, and direct people to the work of this complete one-off of an organisation. You should too. 

The Paddling Light project aims to blur the lines between creators and audiences. Over the last few months we’ve worked with artists, performers, technologists, and canoeists across creative labs and workshops and we’d like even more creative people to get involved. 

We have paid opportunities for up to twelve artists to join the fun and share their work as part of the BEACON event. We’re looking for moving image work for Open Projections and we have some micro-commissions to run alongside Paddling Light.

We have space for 10 contributors to submit existing work for projection onto and into the bays, architecture and features of Coventry Canal Warehouse. We’ll pay a token screener fee of £50 to all artists selected.

We’d like to recruit two artists (from any discipline) to join us for parts of the final rehearsal period for “Paddling Light: The Diviners” as a lightning residency. We’d like these artists to experiment and play, rapidly producing something rough and ready to share as part of the Beacon event on March 27th. Maybe you’re an illustrator that would like to live sketch the event, maybe you’re a photographer who enjoys light painting, maybe you’re a data artist that would like to produce something sensor based, maybe you’re a musician or sound artist that would like to play with our hydrophones. We’re really open to anything, surprise us. Selected artists will receive a fee of £250.

Ludic Rooms have two paid part-time internship roles as part of their Arts Council England funded project, Paddling Light. 

Paddling Light is a performance project in collaboration with Highly Sprung Performance and Mercia Canoe Club and will result in a night time performance on canoes using light and sound on Coventry Canal on 27 March. The Sharing Performance will also involve an Open Projection event involving screenings of films and other moving image works selected for sharing inside Coventry Canal Warehouse spaces.

We have two internship roles available to support the project aimed at young people (18-26) with interests in any of the following; Producing Live events, Outdoor Arts, Digital Arts and Media. 

This is an exciting, but sometimes challenging role, where you will be expected to step up,  make a contribution and work as part of the team. 

Interns will be paid hourly at £12/hr via PAYE on a fixed-term, part-time contract. Candidates will need to demonstrate a right to work in the UK. The internship is expected to be 35 hours over the duration of the project.

Produced as part of Random String 2021, ‘Rites for Crossing Water’ was part of our Future Folk commissioning strand that aimed to imagine future folk rites and rituals for the Coventry Canal. Crewdson & Cevanne collaborated with Coventry artist and illustrator Jessica Glover to develop the work which also involved several workshops with local residents through our roam+dwell summer programme. The commission resulted in spectacular an outdoor installation for the festival in 2021, as well as an EP of new music on Accidental Records and an AR book featuring Jess’s animations, published by LR, which were both launched at The Tin as part of the Waterways Festival in Coventry Canal Basin in 2022.

We couldn’t be happier for Cevanne, Hugh and Jess, and can’t wait to find out the results in a few week’s time.

Join us in Coventry Canal Basin for a day of play!

Saturday August 5th 2023. 1pm – 4pm

We’ll be transforming the canal basin for one special day of play and creativity for all ages. Everything totally free and open to all.

There’ll be canoeing taster sessions from Mercia Canoe Club, get physical with Popup Parkour workshops from Ascension Dance, live music from The Tin Music and Arts and a whole host of other playful activities to get you having fun by the water. We even have free snacks and fruit for kids. If the weather is wet, some activities will head inside the Tin.
