What is Active Minutes?
Active Minutes is a new immersive experience for gyms and fitness spaces. It has been developed by Ludic Rooms with support from Immersive Arts UK.
This is a work in progress sharing. You will be one of the very first people to experience the show. The piece isn’t currently finished and we hope you’ll have fun, but we also need to learn from you. Making an immersive experience isn’t like making a traditional theatre show. Your decisions as players change and shape the piece, and we need participants to play test the piece so that we can understand how it is working, what people enjoy, and how we can refine and develop the story. Our hope is that in 2026 we can further develop the show and take it on tour to fitness and leisure venues across the country.
In the show you will wear an armband containing a smartphone device as well as a pair of bone conducting headphones. These are a special type of headphones that allow you to still hear everything that is happening in the space. The activities in the show are facilitated by a human fitness instructor as well as information given to you by the smartphone device and headset. As well as developing and writing the piece, we have also created all of the software that makes the show work. Everything is new.
What is The Story?
In the show you are an employee of the global company Continuum Solutions. You are a remote worker and so haven’t met most of your work colleagues in real life. The new Chief Executive of the company has decided that all employees should begin to have face-to-face contact a few times a year. You have come to this gym for a corporate wellness away day as part of this initiative.
If you want to do a ‘deep dive’ there is more information online about Continuum Solutions and their subsidiary Monitus Wellbeing.
If you would like to know exactly what happens and you don’t mind spoilers, there is a full story breakdown at the bottom of the page.
What will happen?
As part of the show, you will be invited to take part in a fitness class. The whole activity has been designed so that it is suitable for people of all abilities. Don’t worry, you can choose to engage with the level of physical exertion with which you feel comfortable. The session is approximately 90 minutes, but less than half of this time is spent doing fitness type activities.
Sessions start at 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm.
When you arrive, you will be met by a member of the Ludic Rooms team and you will be asked to read over some briefing information. We will also ask you to fill in a form that lets the workshop leader understand your level of fitness ability and information about any injuries. This information will be confidential and destroyed after the session.

TRIGGER WARNINGS
This is a fun and playful show, but at times it does tackle some complex issues. The show may be perceived to give reference to the following:
Surveillance and Monitoring
Body confidence / shaming
Weight loss/gain
ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE
At the beginning of the experience you will arrive in the leisure centre reception area and be greeted by a member of the Ludic Rooms team. They will get you signed in and ask you to complete some brief paperwork.
They will also give you a letter to read which has QR codes that will take you to different websites that help you get a better understanding of the story universe.
You will then be taken upstairs (or via lift) to the conference space.
From this point forwards the immersive experience has started and you are within the story world of the piece.
You will meet a member of the HR / People team from Continuum Solutions. You will be welcomed to a table where you will meet other members of your company department for the first time. One by one, each company department will be invited to go to IT Services and be given your new Continuum Solutions devices. This will comprise a smartphone in a fitness arm band running a piece of software called ‘Monitus’. You will also be fitted with a headset. IT Services will check that this is all working and that you are comfortable. You can choose to fit these items to your own body or ask for assistance.
It is not practical to see messages and images that appear on the device on your arm so you will be frequently invited to look at other players’ devices.
Once all of the players are ready, you will watch a short video from KD, the Chief Executive of Continuum Solutions before being taken down to the gymnasium space.
In the Gym space you will meet your fitness instructor ‘Pixie Flex’. She is an Instagram FitFluencer and Tiktok celebrity.
You will be invited into the space and reminded that you can participate in fitness activities only to the degree with which you feel comfortable. There are chairs in the space for those that wish to sit. If you do not want to partake in an activity you do not have to.
In the gym space there will be speakers playing music at times in addition to sounds that play from your headsets.
Pixie will introduce you to ‘Moni’ the digital fitness assistant that is provided by the Monitus device. She speaks to you via your headset. She will also rank your performance, frequently this ranking will be unfair. It likely will not reflect how you have engaged in the task given.
Pixie leads the fitness session with Moni interjecting and assisting. Pixie is friendly and carinng but Moni is less kind. Sometimes Moni will try and make you feel bad. Pixie will always try and make you feel good.
You will be taken through a series of activities. In between these activities, there will be ‘Water Breaks’ where you are encouraged to discuss what has been happening with other players. Your performance will also be ranked, again, this ranking will often be deliberately unfair.
1 – Calibration. You will be asked to do very simple physical tasks like lift your arms or do a small jump. Not everyone will be asked to do the same things. (Gentle background music)
2 – Warm up. You will be asked to move around the space. Monitus displays a pedometer and you are encourage to share your step count with others. (Upbeat dance music background)
3 – Risk Management. You will work with other members of your department to suggest short exercise activities for one another, repeated according to a dice roll. You get to choose what you do, eg. 2x star jumps or 4x bicep curls. It doesn’t matter if these are ‘real’ fitness actions or if you know the names of things. (Upbeat dance music background)
4 – Agile Working. This is a pairing game where you will be asked to match images shown on your arms. There is very little physical activity beyond moving around the space. (Upbeat dance music background)
5 – Multitasking. You will be asked to do three physical actions at once. This is silly and fun. You can choose to exert yourself as much as you feel comforatble. (This section is the most intense from a sensory perspective, with louder and faster background music and all participants speaking at once.)
6. Closing activity. The session ends with Pixie getting more and more frustrated with Moni and her approach. You are asked among the group how you would like to proceed and if you wish to complain to the management.
You will then return upstairs to end the session with drinks and snacks before going home.
